Hello everyone,
If you know of anyone with a music background that might want a sub gig in RISD from about late January until mid-March send them my way. They can email jjpearceorchestra@yahoo.com. I'll need one when the baby comes and I can't pretend anymore I'm not a little nervous about who gets to spend time with my students.

Thanks All.

I wanted to thank everyone on this message board who had anything to do with the TODA convention this year. It was the best its ever been and I am very inspired and ready to go back and share everything with my kids.

On a related note, thanks to all of the experienced directors out there who made the new assistant at my school feel so welcome. He is a new teacher and not a primary string player but so many regarded him with so much respect and encouragement. With this kind of leadership we'll have another string teacher for life. Goodness knows we need them.

Finally, congrats to Brian Coatney on Honor Orchestra. You are such an inspiration and oh so humble. You deserve all of your success.

We have small companies locally, however they prioritize the bands. We need a local violin shop that would provide us with good quality and service as well. Someone who really knows the needs of orchestras. Not just out of the box instruments. What happened to cutting a proper bridge and doing quality peg work? I don't think these national companies can or want to do it right. Any help out there?

I've been lucky to use a smaller company that has not had the issues and problems of the bigger companies. That being said, I have still had some issues with parents going to other companies. Most of my help has come from referring those parents to the smaller company, who has been more than helpful to the parents in helping them "get out" of their contracts. Not sure how - but it's been really great!

Here's a few!

1) Classroom management - most do student teaching in places that are already established and working well. Then when they are teaching on their own, they are shocked at how hard it is to get a group of kids under control and deal with this problem. They usually have no experience dealing with this during thier student teaching.
2) Good pacing during rehearsal - to keep students engaged, focused, and interested.
3) How to really listen to what they are playing and not just hear what they see in the score
4) The ability to learn what to fix today and what to fix tomorrow.

I would think twice....well maybe 4 or 5 times before performing a movement of a Brahms Symphony. Pretty serious music for high school students. I have heard orchestras play a movement of one of his symphonies and I wondered if the students really understood what they were playing or if they were just struggling to get through the notes on the page.

I am also a MS director--
I pick scales--eighth note, 2 octave (they have A-Bb to learn); sightreading (something that exercises different finger patterns on different strings as well as changing rhythm patterns, and finally a portion of the music they'll perform at their spring concert.

On the form, I include rhythm/notes/musicality/technique along with other director type items that are factual from the year--practice charts, contributes positively to class etc.

I just completed auditions for next year. I have students play a Major scale and a melodic minor scale, 12-16 measures of a piece (at the top level of my top orchestra), and approximately 8 measures of sight reading from a piece (at the sight reading level for my top orchestra).

Scales I look at intonation, steady beat, and tone quality.

The prepared piece and sight reading I look at intonation, steady beat, rhythm, dynamics, bowing/articulation, tone quality, musicality/vibrato/phrasing.
